FAMILIES

Homeschool families qualify for the Education Freedom Tax Credit too.

For Families and Homeschoolers

Scholarships funded by donors, open to students learning at home

Starting January 2027, scholarships funded by the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit can pay for approved educational expenses for students learning at home. Whether your family can access them depends on your state.

Individual taxpayers can direct up to $1,700 each to Scholarship Granting Organizations and claim it back dollar for dollar against federal tax owed. Those organizations award scholarships to eligible K–12 students.

The program is written to serve students wherever they learn. Public school, private school, and yes, even at home.

What Scholarships Can Cover

Early child care, children learning

Approved educational expenses include:

  • Curriculum and instructional materials
  • Tutoring and supplemental instruction
  • Technology and learning devices
  • Therapy and specialized services
  • Afterschool and enrichment programming
  • Co-op and class fees

Final expense categories are subject to forthcoming U.S. Treasury regulations and to the criteria each Scholarship Granting Organization sets.

Statewide programs

31 states have opted in. Is yours one of them?

31 states opted in

Taxpayers can donate beginning in January 2027, but families can only benefit in states that elect to participate: and Governors must opt in each year. Here's where things stand today.

For Co-ops and Associations

If you lead a co-op, you have a role here

Homeschool families do not have a district office or a diocesan foundation working on their behalf.

Co-ops, state homeschool associations, and homeschool support organizations are the closest thing, and several are already asking how they can participate.

A 501(c)(3) homeschool association can qualify as a Scholarship Granting Organization and serve its member families directly. If that is a conversation you are having, we can walk you through it.

Why ClassWallet

ClassWallet is already serving homeschool families all across America

If you use an education savings account in any of the 37 states we serve, you have used ClassWallet. We are the platform families use to access funds, shop approved vendors, and submit expenses without fronting the money themselves.

We are not a scholarship granting organization and we do not award scholarships. We are the infrastructure that makes them possible.
